Most of Charles Mouton's compositions are contained
in two volumes printed in Paris around 1679 and a manuscript now in
Prague, belonging to the extraordinary Lobkovitz family collection. It
is almost certain that Mouton's published works actually filled four
books, a fact indicated by the publishing business of Etienne Roger,
which provides records of three books attributed to Mouton published in
1707 and a fourth book published before 1712: however, no trace of the
last two remains today. It is not unlikely that most of the repertoire
in the two missing collections is preserved in the Lobkovitz collection
manuscript, believed to be in Mouton's own hand. As well as containing
pièces by the Parisian lutanist, it also offers an interesting
collection of works by Denis and Ennemod Gaultier, often with a double
written by Mouton himself.
Another extremely important item in the
Prague collection is a copy of the second printed volume, printed only
up to page 33 and completed by hand, probably by Mouton himself, with
two new pieces and compositions which had already appeared in print but
presented here under different titles. So there are grounds for
maintaining that there were close contacts between the Lobkowitz family
and our lutanist, perhaps through the young Philipp Lobkowitz
(1680-1735) to whom the volume belonged. Most of the pieces included in
this recording, freely grouped together as a sequence of pièces in the
same key, are from the manuscript sources, although some are from the
printed volumes, and I hope that they provide a fitting representation
of Charles Mouton's extraordinary achievements as a composer.
